Kempegowda International Airport traffic police have found that a jeweller, who had complained to them that his wife was killed in a hit-and-run accident near Bachahalli Gate 17 days ago, had actually murdered her by pushing her out of the moving car & running the vehicle over her.

Kempegowda International Airport traffic police on Tuesday detained Tej Singh Kanwar, 27, a resident of Hunasamaranahalli, for killing his wife, Gattu Kanwar, 27. Since traffic police cann't pursue criminal investigation, they will transfer the case to the KIA law & order police.

Kanwar had taken his wife out in a self-drive rental car, but was ignorant that the vehicle was GPS-enabled. When the route was replayed on the GPS, it revealed Kanwar had reversed & then moved the car forward at the accident spot. This was enough for the police to crack the case.

Traffic police said Kanwar, in his complaint on Nov 17, had said he & his wife had gone on a drive to Nandi Hills. At Bachahalli Gate, his wife told him she felt sick. According to his complaint, Gattu was seated in the rear & had got down on the right hand side. Kanwar said a speeding vehicle, whose details he didn't notice, mowed down his wife & sped away.

Kanwar reportedly rushed his wife to a private hospital & later to a govt hospital in Yelahanka where doctors declared her brought dead. Traffic police visited the ‘accident’ scene & suspected something amiss. They summoned Kanwar’s parents & relatives to find out if the 2 had any differences between them. But all of them said the couple led a peaceful life from the time they were married 5 years ago.

When cops found Kanwar was driving a GPS-enabled vehicle, inspector Chandrashekhar YS replayed the route. He found the car’s reverse & forward movement at the accident scene odd. Police also found 3 of Kanwar’s relatives had accompanied the couple to a dinner party hours before the incident.

“We summoned all 3 to record their statements. One of them told us Kanwar had told him that he had murdered his wife. We picked up Kanwar for questioning & he confessed,” police said.
Wife brought ‘ill luck’

Kanwar & Gattu were from Jalore, Rajasthan. He told police that he worked in a jewellery shop owned by Gattu’s father. His was an arranged marriage.

“Kanwar said his paternal uncle was killed in a road accident on their wedding day & some in the 2 families wanted the wedding cancelled,” police said. “But his father & father-in-law didn't agree.

Kanwar said he believed his wife was unlucky. He believed his financial condition never improved because of her. He moved to Bengaluru two years ago & opened a jewellery shop at Hunasamaranahalli.”

Kanwar decided to kill his wife & make it look like an accident. He asked his friend Gurupreet Singh, a college student in the city, to hire a car from a rental firm on Nov 16, police said, quoting Kanwar’s confession.

“After the dinner, Kanwar convinced his drunk wife to go on a joy drive to Nandi Hills. He asked his wife to rest in the backseat. Noticing that she was dozing & leaning on the door, Kanwar opened it & pushed her out. He then reversed the car over her,” police said.
