For children of construction workers in Mumbai & Thane, the Punjab National Bank Housing Finance Limited (PNBHFL) is starting five daycare centres as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
The service is being extended to labourers working on construction projects connected to the company. While 2 centres are being started in Mulund & Wadala, 3 more are being established in Thane. PNBHFL is already operating 28 such daycare centres across India, said Punjab National Bank Housing Finance Limited officials.
Chief people officer & head of the CSR department, Anshul Bhargava said that the focus is on nurturing the physical, mental & emotional growth of the children.
Bhargava said, “they are robbed of a steady environment & the support of an extended family due to the migratory nature of their parents’ jobs".
The scheme includes skill intervention programmes in disciplines like plumbing, electrical & other fields, with the training being provided by the National Skill Development Corporation. PNBHFL has partnered with organisations like the CREDAI CSR Foundation & Helpage India to extend services for construction workers.
“The CREDAI CSR Foundation has trained 13,000 construction workers onsite & offsite. Onsite locations include places where the labourers are working, while offsite development includes getting labourers from their hometowns in Jharkhand & Bihar & providing employment after training them. We have conducted skills training workshops for many developers in Mumbai. We also train tribal youth & get them employed with a registered contractor,” said Mr. Bhargav.
PNBHFL, in partnership with Helpage India, is also planning mobile health units (MHUs) to improve the quality of life of the elderly. “Due to the breakdown of the traditional joint family system, formation of nuclear families & mass migration of the younger generation, the elderly do not get adequate attention from immediate family members. The MHUs will operate in 21 locations across Mumbai to provide healthcare to people over 55 years of age, with 50% of the beneficiaries being from economically weaker sections,” he said.
Another initiative includes training youth from lower socio-economic backgrounds to become caretakers or assistants to senior citizens through recruitment agencies.
