June 19, 2019:
There was a time when we used to call television an idiot box. However, new age televisions can now connect to the internet & make it easier to stream & watch online contents. TVs can now also show recommendations based on the user’s watching habits. This feature is done using automatic content recognition (ACR) that try to recognize all the content being played on the television, including over-the-air, cable, streaming services & disc. This seems to be a useful feature, but at the same time, there have been several reports popping up over the internet for a television brand sharing such information to some third-party agencies mostly advertising. Hence, there’s a fair amount of change that your television set is doing the same.
How to stop our smart TV from ‘spying’ & collecting personal data? Well, each television brand has its way for implementing this feature & here’s our step-by-step guide.
LG: Turn of the ‘Live Plus’ option from the settings menu On newer LG models: Click on the ‘Settings’ icon at the upper right side of the main menu screen. Next, head to ‘All Settings’ & look for ‘General’ option. Then, scroll down & look for the option ‘Live Plus’ On older models: Turn of the Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, Viewing information, & Personalized Advertising’ which can be found under the Úser Agreements’ option just below the About this TV option.
Sony: Turn off Interactive TV Settings or Samba Interactive TV Sony Android-based smart TVs: Go to the ‘Settings’ & head to the System Preferences option. Select ‘Interactive TV Settings or Samba Interactive TV & disable it. On older Sony TVs: Head to Settings -> Preferences-> Setup-> Network->Samba Interactive TV -> Settings & disable it.
