The Rajasthan govt is mulling over providing free Indian Standard Institute (ISI) marked helmets with each challan of Rs 1,000 for those who are caught driving without helmets. Transport minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas told on Wed. that several penalties issued under the centre’s newly amended Motor Vehicle (MV) act cann't be imposed in Rajasthan. “We will take a call (on implementation of new MV Act) in Rajasthan keeping in mind the sentiments of our people. Though, we are planning to provide free helmets to those who pay a challan of Rs 1,000 for driving without helmets,” he said.
A day earlier, CM Ashok Gehlot chaired a high-level meeting on the issue of implementing the new MV Act. He later said that it was agreed upon that initially the compounding fees will be kept at minimal levels while stress will be given on increasing awareness about traffic safety in Rajasthan.
The transport officials on Wednesday said that efforts were being made to identify the serious traffic offences.
Minister Khachariyawas told that under the new MV act, the penalty for driving without helmet was hiked from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000. “This in one of the few good provisions under the new law. Therefore, we think that a person who has paid Rs 1,000 for driving without the helmet should also be able to avail free helmet for better security & safety,” he said.
The minister said that Rajasthan govt willn't hurry with the decision to implement the new MV act in the state.
