In the coming days, parking will be very regulated & priced based on demand. People will have to give proof of parking space before registering their cars with Road Transport Authorities.
Buying permits for on-street parking in residential areas will attract incremental charges on premium commercial roads. Bicycles can be parked without charge within a few hundred metres of Bus stands.
A senior AMC official stated that “We are waiting for Amdavadis to get acquainted with new traffic fines & to get used to adhering to traffic rules before we declare the comprehensive parking policy.
The parking policy for Ahmedabad will be aligned with the National Urban Transport Policy (NUTP). “We will begin with commercial or designated ‘work’ areas & then venture into residential zones,” the official said. “Our focus now is to resolve last-mile connectivity for the overall public transport network.”
There was a passenger surge in public transport after new traffic fines came into force, the official said.
He added, “A parking restriction will add new numbers.
The key focus of the NUTP is to constantly discourage parking on all arterial roads including at short-stay parking facilities such as entertainment & tourist areas.
In time, visitors will be discouraged from parking in residential zones.
According to the official, “Overnight parking for large container vehicles & multi-axle trucks will discouraged except at designated transport hubs & zones near industrial estates".
