With 1,084 females born per thousand males, Arunachal Pradesh recorded the best sex ratio in India, followed by Nagaland at 965 females and Mizoram at 964. The 3 northeastern states top the 2018 report on “Vital statistics of India based on the Civil Registration System (CRS)”. Manipur, on the other hand, featured at the bottom of the list.
The sex ratio (number of females per thousand males) is an important indicator to map the gender gap of a population.
“Highest Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) based on registered events has been reported by Arunachal Pradesh (1,084), followed by Nagaland (965), Mizoram (964) & Kerala (963). Meanwhile, lowest SRB has been reported by Manipur (757), Lakshadweep (839) & Daman & Diu (877), followed by Punjab (896),” the report, prepared by the Registrar General & Census Commissioner of India, read.
Assam’s sex ratio is 904, Tripura’s 945: Report
Assam recorded a sex ratio of 904, Meghalaya 942 & Tripura 945.
CRS in India is the unified process of continuous, permanent, compulsory & universal recording of the vital events (births, deaths, stillbirths) & characteristics thereof. The data generated through a complete & up-to-date CRS is essential for socio-economic planning.
As per the report, Assam is one of the 13 out of 20 major states to have crossed 90% registration of births. Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya are among ten states in the category of 50-80 per cent registration on births within the stipulated time period of 21 days, & Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh & Nagaland fall under the less-than-50 per cent category.
