A 79-year-old man was cheated of Rs 1.5 crore after a woman befriended him on an European social media platform earlier this year. Mulund police will soon register an FIR in the case.

The victim, a retired engineer, lost jewellery of his wife worth Rs 1.5 crore & was about to sell his flat in Mulund when his US-based son stopped him from doing so, said Police.

In May 2019, the retired engineer came in contact with a “Spanish woman aged 44 who called herself Vivian Lovett”. She tild him she was sending across a jewellery parcel for him. When he refused to accept it, she told him to give it to an orphanage. A month later, he received a call from one Radhika Sharma claiming to be a customs officer who asked him to pay duty on the parcel. He paid it. A week later, she called him again & said she was caught at Delhi airport for carrying foreign currency & asked him to pay a fine of Rs 30 lakh. “The victim pawned his wife’s jewellery & paid it. He was about to sell his flat when his son intervened,” a police official said.
