Project 39A at National Law University, Delhi will be organising a conference in New Delhi from March 20th – 22nd 2020, inviting leading academics, lawyers, judges, and other legal luminaries to reflect on the impact of the Bachan Singh judgment, and through this, on the development of law and administration of capital punishment in India. There will be five sessions dedicated to parsing the various issues that the judgment itself and the application of the death penalty have raised over the past forty years.
Project 39A believes in the importance of meaningful exposure of students to the complexities and nuances of the criminal justice system in India. In order to ensure equal opportunity to law students from all over the country, we are offering a paid studentship to participate in this conference. Students will receive the opportunity to participate and engage with eminent academics, lawyers and judges on legal and philosophical issues fundamental to our democracy.
25 students will be selected for this programme. Students presently enrolled in any LL.B. or LL.M. programme in any University in India are eligible to apply.
As part of this studentship, Project 39A will offer the following:
Accomodation in Delhi on double occupancy basis for four nights (March 19, 2020 to March 22, 2020)
Reimbursement of IIIAC return train fare
Attend all sessions of Forty Years of Bachan Singh: A Retrospective on the Death Penalty
Collaborate with at least one other recipient of the studentship in publishing an academic article on any theme arising from the proceedings of the conference. The academic article must be published in a peer reviewed journal. The list of potential journals will be identified in consultation with Project 39A.
Provide assistance in documentation of the proceedings at the conference
Provide research and logistical assistance in creating audio-visual material at the conference
Any other administrative assistance that may be required
All recipients of the studentships who successfully meet the above requirements will be eligible to participate in a competitive selection process for a six month Criminal Justice Research Fellowship with Project 39A. Three research fellowships (including the option of working remotely) are being offered through this process. Research fellows will be paid a consolidated stipend of Rs. 50,000 at the successful completion of the fellowship. During this period, Fellows will be required to undertake and complete research tasks as identified by Project 39A.
