Today, in a shocking breach of courtroom decorum, four men accused in a case involving alleged mockery of religious practices linked to Goddess Kali were assaulted inside a Jammu court premises during their bail hearing. The incident, which unfolded in the presence of legal professionals, raises serious concerns over safety within courtrooms and the ability of the justice system to function without intimidation or disorder.
The case centres around a viral video alleged to have mocked religious practices associated with Goddess Kali, leading to criminal proceedings under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, for outraging religious sentiments. Following complaints by local individuals, multiple accused were arrested, with some later granted interim bail. On the day of the incident, four of the accused appeared before the trial court in compliance with prior directions, where the court was to consider whether their interim bail should be confirmed. However, as proceedings were underway, a group of lawyers allegedly confronted and attacked the accused within the courtroom, resulting in injuries and disruption of proceedings.
The situation escalated rapidly, forcing the Presiding Judge to step away from the courtroom as order broke down. The attack, reportedly carried out in open court, led to visible injuries, with eyewitnesses describing scenes of chaos.
