Two Indian-origin men have been fined approximately ₹1.72 lakh each by a London Court for spitting paan in public, after failing to pay initial fines and remaining absent from court proceedings. What began as a minor civic violation escalated into a significant legal consequence, reflecting the UK’s uncompromising stance on public nuisance and its readiness to enforce strict penalties where offenders disregard due process.
The incident traces back to June 2025, when Akshitkumar Bhadre Patel and Hitesh Patel were separately caught spitting paan in public areas in Brent, north-west London. Both were initially issued on-the-spot fines of £100 for the offences. However, their failure to pay the fines or appear before the court led to the escalation of proceedings. Authorities have increasingly cracked down on paan spitting due to its impact on public hygiene and infrastructure, with local councils highlighting the persistent problem of stains on streets, pavements, and public property.
The enforcement authorities adopted a strict stance, emphasising that non-compliance with penalties would attract harsher consequences. Reinforcing its zero-tolerance policy, the council warned, “if you mess up our streets, we will find you and you will pay,” reflecting a broader commitment to maintaining civic cleanliness and deterring repeat violations.
Consequently, both individuals were convicted in absentia and fined £1,391 each, significantly higher than the original penalties.
