July 17,2017:
Warfare between the Karnataka’s top two Prison Officers, Deputy Inspector General of police (DIG) D Roopa and her Boss Director General of Police (DGP), Prisons, H N Sathyanarayana Rao, took another turn with Karnataka Government transferring both of them from their posts, where they have been feuding over the special amenities given to V K Sasikala, the AIADMK (Amma) leader who is lodged in Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru.
Along with them, Chief Superintendent of Prisons K Krishnakumar has been transferred as well.
Sathyanarayana Rao, who is days away from the retirement, has been transferred without a posting while Roopa has been posted as DIG and Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety in Bengaluru. N S Megharikh has been posted as additional DGP (prisons).
Here are the allegations made by the DIG Roopa, which triggered the whole sequence of events:
1. The AIADMK Leader V K Sasikala, imprisoned in disaproportionate assets case, have been provided with a kitchen at her barrack which is against Prisons Act. A Rs 2 crore bribe was given to provide facility.
2. Stamp paper scam convict Abdul Kareem Lal Telagi sought wheel chair and assistants in a petition to Court six months ago. Despite being in good condition now, 3-4 undertrial inmates were always with him to massage his legs, hands and shoulder. According to law, it is illegal to let undertrial inmates be with convicts. Though this came to the notice of SP, no action was taken.
3. During the medical checkup of prisoners on July 10, doctors confirmed that 18 out of the 25 prisoners were drug abusers etc.
