SC refuses to stay Jallikattu Act, but raps Tamil Nadu Govt for failing to contain protests

While refusing to stay the new Jallikattu Act, the Apex Court today criticised the Tamil Nadu Government for its faliure to maintain the law and order during the recent protests.

The court told the Government “Law & order is your duty, so make sure that people do not defy our orders.”

The court agreed to examine the newly enacted Law by the Tamil Nadu government that allowed the bull taming sport and issued notice to the state government and sought a reply within six weeks.

On January 21  State unanimously passed an amendment bill for conducting Jallikattu without any hindrance.

The Bill to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 aimed at replacing an ordinance promulgated earlier.

Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam ensured that “Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment), Act, 2017” is adopted by voice vote.

The new Law came into effect on, January 21, 2017.

The ordinance was a result of raging protests across the State, especially at the Marina Beach, demanding lifting of the ban on Jallikattu.
