On Wednesday, Supreme Court sought responses from Centre and Election Commission of India (ECI) on a plea seeking scrapping of the pension and other perks being given to the Members of Parliament.
It had been alleged that the pension and other perks being given to the MPs even after demitting their office are contrary to Article 14 (Right to Equality) of Constitution.
Plea further stated that Parliament has no power to provide for the pensionary benefits to the lawmakers without making any law.
Salary, Allowances, and Pension of Members of Parliament (Amendment) Bill, 2010 was introduced in the Lok Sabha in August,2010 and was passed by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on August 31, 2010.
The Amendment had revised pension and some more benefits of the Members of Parliament (both houses) as below.
Earlier eligibility of an Member Of Parliament (MP ) was Rs 8,000 per month. If an MP has served more than five years, he shall be entitled to Rs 800 extra for every year he has served after the first five years. Bill amended this amount of pension to Rs 20,000 and the extra entitlement to Rs 1,500. Now there is another move to upwardly enhance it by 75% to Rs. 35,000 per month.
