SC on Sabarimala Case: We respect views of eminent authors and thinkers, but not from 'WhatsApp University'

On Thursday, the Supreme Court stated that it respects the views of all eminent authors and thinkers, but it cannot accept information from 'WhatsApp University'.

SC's nine-judge Constitution bench observed while hearing petitions related to discrimination against women at religious places, including the Sabarimala Temple in Kerala, and on the ambit and scope of religious freedom practised by multiple faiths.

Apex Court bench was composed of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices B V Nagarathna, M M Sundresh, Ahsanuddin Amanullah, Aravind Kumar, Augustine George Masih, Prasanna B Varale, R Mahadevan, and Joymalya Bagchi.

The hearings concern the review of the 2018 verdict that allowed women of all ages to enter the Sabarimala temple.

The bench is examining the scope of religious freedom (Article 25), the concept of "essential religious practices," and whether petitioners can restrict women from temple entry.
