Cars and SUVs with tubeless tyres will now be allowed to run without a spare wheel, if these have a standard puncture repair kit and tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS).
Currently, a few high end SUVs available in India have the TPMS, which monitors the inflation pressure while the vehicle is running and it also simultaneously transmits information to drivers to alert them in case there is a sudden reduction in pressure.
The road transport ministry on Monday notified the standards that the TPMS installed in vehicles will have to comply with from this October 1.
“As of now installing the TPMS is voluntary as an added feature. But there is a high probability of more demand for this in the near future to increase fuel efficiency of vehicles and also to reduce mishaps,” said an official.
As per specifications, the system shall operate from a speed of 40 kmph or below up to the vehicle's maximum design speed.
