Man held in Odisha for spreading fake news on coronavirus on Social Media

A 32-year-old man was arrested for allegedly spreading fake news on coronavirus in Rayagada district of Odisha.

The accused has been identified as Satyanarayan Samal alias Dipu, who hails from Ambadola area.

Samal had posted on Facebook regarding a Kerala-return person who had tested positive for coronavirus and was under treatment in Rayagada.

Later, Samal claimed he had received the information on the WhatsApp group.

Based on a directive issued by Senior Officials, the Rayagada Police carried out verification and found the news to be completely fake.

We got information about the news, which went viral by Satyanarayan Samal. We verified it and found it to be fake. Thereafter, Samal was arrested under IPC Section 153 (A), 504, 505," Rayagada SP Dr. Saravana Vivek said.

As per the government guidelines, spreading false information or rumors about coronavirus is a punishable offense under the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897. It has been invoked by the state government recently.
