On Thursday, the much awaited Maternity Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha by voice vote.
Bill increases maternity leaves from 12 weeks to 26 weeks for the pregnant women. '
It also protects employment of women during time of pregnancy and entitles them of full paid absence from work to take care of child. Bill was moved by Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya in the Lower House.
Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016, was passed by Rajya Sabah in August. It aimed at benefiting about 1.8 million women in organised sector.
Bill will be applicable to establishments that hires at least 10 or more people.
India will take the third place in terms of the Maternity leaves after Canada and Norway.
