The Delhi High Court in a recent judgment directed the Delhi University (DU) to set up a mechanism for the issuance of digital degree certificates.
The Petitioner in the present case is a graduate of SRCC, DU who was seeking digital degree certificates for the Bachelor’s Course which had not been received yet. It was the point of the Petitioner that despite the online submission of the application for issuance of digital degree certificate and completion of all formalities, DU is insisting on the physical submission of a hard copy of the application.
A few weeks back, an online portal was established by DU for enabling students to apply for the issuance of such certificates.
The Counsel for the Petitioner contended that they had received numerous complaints with regard to this issue. The contents of the application show that though the Applicant has completed the formalities online, DU is insisting on the documents being submitted physically.
Upon perusal of the documents, it was stated by the court that DU shall not insist on the submission of hard copies for the purpose of issuing digital degree certificates. The court also observed, “Insisting on the submission of a hard copy would again set the whole process at naught and create further inefficiencies. It would also force students to visit the University, which ought to be completely avoided.” The Court thus ordered DU not to insist upon submission of hard copies. They also ordered that the fact that the petitioner did not receive the certificate within the stipulated one week’s time was contrary to the orders of the court in the aforementioned case.
