Ex-Meghalaya HC Chief Justice Uma Nath Singh has defended his retirement eve order directing the state to provide him with 'Z' category security post-retirement by saying that he perceived threat to his life from orders he had passed 6 years ago as a judge of Allahabad High Court.
When this matter was taken up couple of times by a bench headed by then Chief Justice of India TS Thakur, the Apex Court had questioned the locus standi of the private citizens who'd moved court against Justice Singh & said that judges worked under difficult circumstances.
However, the Supreme Court had sought Meghalaya govt's response. Suo motu responding to these proceedings, Justice Singh had on 28th September last year written to SC registry explaining his position. The letter was kept in sealed cover.
The new Chief Justice of India, JS Khehar, has ordered a copy of that letter to be given to the counsel for petitioner & Meghalaya govt. In this letter, Justice Singh defended his decision in January 2016 to direct the Meghalaya govt. to continue providing him 'Z' category security post his retirement.
He said that as a judge of Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court in 2010, he'd taken a "tough stand" against the advocates who brandished weapons while assaulting the investigating officers in criminal land & grabbing cases.
Justice U N Singh also referred to his order directing eviction of the violent Jat protesters from railway tracks despite the police being reluctant to do this fearing large scale violence involved. In 2013 he ordered banning of caste rallies in UP, which caused lots of aggression & resentment in minds of the political parties that were dependant on caste combinations in the elections.
