When this matter was taken up couple of times by a bench headed by then Chief Justice of India TS Thakur, the Apex Court had questioned the locus standi of the private citizens who'd moved court against Justice Singh & said that judges worked under difficult circumstances.

However, the Supreme Court had sought Meghalaya govt's response. Suo motu responding to these proceedings, Justice Singh had on 28th September last year written to SC registry explaining his position. The letter was kept in sealed cover.

The new Chief Justice of India, JS Khehar, has ordered a copy of that letter to be given to the counsel for petitioner & Meghalaya govt. In this letter, Justice Singh defended his decision in January 2016 to direct the Meghalaya govt. to continue providing him 'Z' category security post his retirement.

Justice U N Singh also referred to his order directing eviction of the violent Jat protesters from railway tracks despite the police being reluctant to do this fearing large scale violence involved. In 2013 he ordered banning of caste rallies in UP, which caused lots of aggression & resentment in minds of the political parties that were dependant on caste combinations in the elections. As Meghalaya CJ banning bandh calls by proscribed outfits.

Though he had ordered 'Z' category security for him after his retirement, Justice U N Singh clarified that "after my retirement, I haven't had 'Z' category security, nor have I ever demanded that kind of security from any govt". "I've been provided with only 2 PSOs & 3 armed police personnel of the UP police," he wrote.
