On Saturday, DMK organising secretary and Rajya Sabha member R S Bharathi was arrested by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the Chennai city police morning for his inflammatory speech about a Madras high court judge.

Police said Bharathi spoke at a meeting of DMK functionaries at Teynampet on February 15. During the speech, he sarcastically mentioned a judge’s name and said he was ‘offered’ the judge’s post by DMK indicating his communal identity.

On May 12, the high court directed the Chennai city police to conduct an inquiry into the inflammatory speech, register an appropriate case and complete the proceedings within 30 days. Following this, the Teynampet police registered a case against Bharathi under Section-03 (allegation that the accused has insulted intentionally or intimidated the complainant and such insult or intimidation) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

The case was registered based on a complaint filed by Athi Tamilar Makkal Katchi leader Kalyanasundaram on May 12. Later, it was transferred to the CCB.

A CCB team nabbed Bharathi from his residence in Chennai and took him to the old commissioner’s office for further investigations.
