June 28,2017:
Delhi Golf Club has on Tuesday issued an apology to female member who's guest, a Meghalaya woman wearing the traditional Khasi attire, was told to leave by the staff.
The Club in its statement has stated that, "We have sought explanation from staff and disciplinary action is in process. Apology has been made to member who had brought the guest. This has been unconditionally accepted".
This comes two days after, Tailin Lyngdoh who works as Governess for Dr Nivedita Barthakur Sondhi, was asked to leave by Club staff for wearing a jainsem.
"Around 15 minutes after we arrived, the Manager, Ajit Pal, accompanied by Sumita Thakur, asked Ms. Lyngdoh to leave table and the room. When I asked them the reason, they said she looked like a maid. Then I asked them how they concluded that. They said she looks different, dresses like a servant and looks like a Nepalese. That was so humiliating! I wasn't ready to accept such discrimination," Sondhi had stated.
"I protested as they were insulting the traditional dress of an Indian citizen. I also argued that her profession is immaterial as she has been invited as guest by a member," Sondhi had said, adding that all of them left club as nobody else who saw it intervened.
Lyngdoh added that she has travelled to London and UAE wearing the jainsem but has never faced any trouble there, rather people appreciated jainsem. Dr Sondhi has also posted on Facebook:
