The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday directed Vellore collector A Shanmuga Sundram to submit a detailed report on the ‘airdropping’ of a dalit’s body from a 20-foot bridge near Natrampallai after the non-dalits allegedly denied access to a crematorium.

Chairperson of the commission Justice H L Dutta, during an open hearing of case related to Scheduled Castes (SC)/Scheduled Tribes (ST) atrocities, sought an explanation from the collector regarding the incident. The hearing was held in Chennai.

Collector denied the allegations & said that an inquiry had been conducted with the 30 families belonging to the Top Court community & residents of Narayanakuppam Colony on the TN-AP border. The administration had also identified land to set up a crematorium with the consent of the residents of the colony, he said. The collector also stated that there was no restriction for the dalits to use the passage.

However, Justice Dutta sought a report from the collector.
