Ban on diesel vehicles: NGT stays order for 2 weeks

The counsel for Delhi government admitted that the government was finding it difficult to implement the order.

The Delhi government, on Monday, got a breather as the National Green Tribunal (NGT) stayed for two weeks its orders for removing diesel vehicles that are ten years or above off the city streets.

A bench headed by NGT chairperson Swatanter Kumar stayed its order for two weeks and said that there shall be no impounding of ten-year-old diesel vehicles for the time being.

The matter was heard by the Bench after it was mentioned before it by Ms. Zubeida Begum, the counsel for Delhi government, who admitted that the government was finding it difficult to implement the order.

She also submitted that supply of essential commodities is also suffering in light of the ban order.

While staying its order for two weeks, the Bench directed the government to come up with suggestions on providing incentives to those transferring or scrapping old, polluting diesel vehicles and on fixing a cap on the number of vehicles to be registered in the capital.
