A 16-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district got the shock of her life when she got to know that a sum of Rs 10 crore was credited in her bank account a few days ago.

According to a complaint filed in the matter in the district’s Bansdih police station, a person under the name of Neelesh Kumar from Kanpur Dehat district had called up the 16-year-old and asked for her personal identification details two years ago, according to PTI. Kumar asked the girl, Saroj, for her Aadhar card, photograph and told her these were needed to transfer funds into her account under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

The teenage girl, who is illiterate, reportedly said that had an account in the Allahabad Bank’s branch in Bansdih since 2018. She went to the bank on Monday and was told by officials there that her account balance was Rs 9.99 crore. She immediately went to the police station and reported the anomaly.

The girl had no clue about the source of money and said the Neelesh’s number, from which she used to get the calls, was no switched off.

Bansdih police station said the matter is under investigation and action will be taken against the accused.

However, according to a “fact check” report in news website DNA, the girl’s account had only Rs 5,000 as there was never a transaction of Rs 10 crore. However, the report said there was one transaction of Rs 17 lakh made in the girl’s account.
