Lahore anti-terrorism Court has sentenced Zakiur Rahman Lakhvi to 5 years in prison on terror financing charges. Lakhvi is the mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai Terror Attack.

Earlier on Thursday, an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan issued an arrest warrant for banned Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) Chief Masood Azhar on the charges of terror financing. Zakiur Rahman Lakhvi was also arrested on similar charges and on Friday he was sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment.

On January 2, Pakistan had announced that it has arrested Mumbai attack mastermind and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operations commander Lakhvi in Lahore on terror financing charges.

Zakiur Rahman Lakhvi, who is a UN proscribed terrorist, was on bail since 2015 in the Mumbai attack case. He was arrested by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab province in January amidst a growing international pressure on Pakistan to bring to justice terrorists roaming free in the country.

The UN Security Council’s 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee had recently allowed for a monthly payment of Pakistani Rupee 1.5 lakh for Lakhvi to meet his personal expenses.

Lashkar-e-Taiba, led by Jamat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, has been found responsible for carrying out the 2008 Mumbai attack that killed 166 people, including six Americans.

The global terror financing watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is instrumental in pushing Pakistan to take measures against terrorists roaming freely in Pakistan and using its territory to carry out attacks in India and elsewhere.
