Recently, the U.S. President Donald Trump selected members of his legal defence team to assume high-ranking roles at the Justice Department. Among these appointees, Todd Blanche, who led Trump’s defence in a high-profile criminal case involving hush money payments, has been nominated for the position of Deputy Attorney General. Trump stated that Blanche’s leadership is crucial for reforming the Justice Department, which he believes has long been dysfunctional.
Todd Blanche, previously Trump’s lead attorney in a case concerning alleged hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, was nominated by Trump as Deputy Attorney General, a position responsible for overseeing the Justice Department’s 110,000 employees and agencies like the FBI. Former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstin described Blanche as a “highly credible” choice. Blanche is currently representing Trump in federal cases related to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results and the retention of classified documents post-presidency. Trump’s conviction on multiple counts of business record falsification in the hush money case remains on hold.
Alongside Blanche, Trump also nominated John Sauer for Solicitor General, citing Sauer’s past advocacy for broad presidential immunity before the U.S. Supreme Court in Trump-related matters. In another key decision, Trump appointed former Representative Matt Gaetz as his Attorney General nominee.
Trump praised Blanche’s expertise and commitment, emphasising his confidence in Blanche’s ability to oversee substantial changes within the Justice Department. He argued that the appointments of Blanche, Sauer, and Gaetz reflect his commitment to reforming a Justice Department he views as politically biassed. Trump has expressed that these appointments are part of his broader plan to reshape the institution, which he contends has pursued unfair investigations and prosecutions against him and his associates. Each nomination will be subject to Senate confirmation, with Emil Bove set to serve as Blanche’s acting deputy during the confirmation process.
