September 12,2018:
World Sports Alumni (WSA) the professional athlete association which promotes current and former sports athletes across all sports filed a suit against the National Football League (NFL) & NFL Alumni to the US District Court For Middle District of Florida for using the name, images and likeliness of three US sports stars without their permission.
NFL used the images of retired National Basketball Association (NBA) player Nick Anderson, former professional boxer Riddick Bowe and former NFL player Brandon Meriweather without their consent.
NFL used images of Nick Anderson and Riddick Bowe on marketing material to promote an NBA celebrity Pro Bowl Party hosted in Florida, December 2017. According to WSA, despite requesting NFL to remove the unauthorised marketing material on behalf of the two players, it remained active until the party in January 2018.
Further, NFL allegedly used the name, likeliness and images of Brandon Meriweather to promote a tailgate party (pre-match party) in Orlando, Florida in January 2018 and on being asked to remove the unauthorised material on behalf of Brandon Meriweather by WSA, NFA didn’t oblige as the material remained active until the end of the event, according to the complaint. The complaint also stated that none of the players signed an agreement to give the NFL the permission to use their images.
WSA is seeking damages and injunction relief on behalf of Nick Anderson, Riddick Bowe and Brandon Meriweather and said that this act of the defendants has led to the failure to protect sportsmen’s privacy and resulted in financial and emotional harm.
