November 17,2018:
The Guangzhou Yuexiu District Court declared that the four companies involved in the production of similar toys like Lego can no longer manufacture, sell or promote their products, additionally, the defendants have been directed to pay around 4.5 million Yuan for damages.
Lego said in a statement that the four defendants were found guilty of “infringing multiple copyrights of the Lego Group and conducting acts of unfair competition by producing and distributing Lepin building sets.”
Lego has been extremely active in protecting its brand lately and has already won two major cases of copyright infringement in 2017 against Bela products. Lego Chief Executive Officer Niels B. Christiansen said, “The rulings clearly demonstrate the continued efforts of Chinese authorities to protect Intellectual Property. We will continue to take all necessary legal actions to protect our Intellectual Property Rights.”
Also, Lego sees China as a huge future market for itself in the coming years which are why it is trying to resolve all disputes relating to its trademark as soon as possible. It is planning to open flagship stores in Shanghai and Beijing and continue its partnership with Tencent.
