January 22,2019:
A man named Fredrick Zaccheo is suing Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment over the use of the slogan “Save the Dinos” which he had licensed to the producers for the Jurassic World Film’s marketing campaign. According to the documents presented in the Court, Zaccheo doesn’t have the valid Trademarks to file a lawsuit.
Universal City Studios claims that they paid Zaccheo $50,000 to use the phrase but also asked him not to interfere with film promotions. However, due to the lawsuit filed by Fredrick Zaccheo the previous agreement has been breached as result of which Universal Studios counter-sued Zaccheo for breaching the original contract.
The slogan “Save the Dinos” was used by many characters in the movie and also by a fictional organization called the Dinosaur Protection Group. Zaccheo claims that he insisted that the slogan should not be used to sell clothing or to promote animal rights or endangered species efforts. He also said that the agreement stated that any merchandising done for the movie using the slogan had to use it “in connection with other branding associated with the Jurassic Park/ Jurassic World franchise.”
Zaccheo claims that Universal and Amblin breached the deal by selling shirts, socks and other clothing items with the slogan on them. Zaccheo is suing for breach of contract and Trademark Infringement and is seeking damages in excess of $10 million.
