About the Competition

If you’ve got a flair for fiction and a passion for storytelling, the 25th Annual Writer’s Digest Short Short Story Competition is your chance to shine.

They’re looking for the best short fiction in 1,500 words or fewer, and you could be the next winner of $3,000 in cash, publication in Writer’s Digest magazine, and a paid trip to the Writer’s Digest Annual Conference!

Prizes

• First Place: $3,000 cash, an interview feature in Writer’s Digest (Sept/Oct 2025 issue), publication on WritersDigest.com, a paid trip to the Writer’s Digest Annual Conference, a trophy presentation at the keynote, and a one-on-one pitch session with editors or agents.
• Second Place: $1,500 cash, your story’s title published in Writer’s Digest magazine and on WritersDigest.com.
• Third Place: $500 cash, your story’s title published in Writer’s Digest magazine and on WritersDigest.com.
• 4th-10th Places: $100 cash, your story title published in Writer’s Digest magazine and on WritersDigest.com.
• 11th-25th Places: A $50 gift certificate for WritersDigestShop.com and your name/story title published on WritersDigest.com.

How to Enter?

• All stories must be submitted online.
• Entries must be original, unpublished works (self-published blog or social media entries are accepted).
• All entries must be in English. Only original works that have not been published (at the time of submission) in print, digital or online publications will be considered. Self-published work in blogs, on social media, etc. will be considered. Writer’s Digest retains one-time nonexclusive publication rights to the winning entries to be published in a Writer’s Digest publication.
• Format your manuscript on 8-1/2 x 11 or A4 paper, double-spaced, and include the word count at the top.
• Word limit: 1,500 words max. Exceeding the word count will result in disqualification.
• Be sure to submit by the Early-Bird Deadline: November 15, 2024!
