July 19, 2019:
College goers now have a chance to learn about crime victims, interact with the criminal justice system, learn methods to provide security & prevent cybercrime as Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) is set to start three new postgraduate diploma courses in victimology & victim protection, security management & cybercrime & law.
While the admission process for the three new courses started on Thursday, the courses will tentatively begin from August 16 in affiliation with Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan National Institute of Criminology & Forensic Science, which is already offering MA & MSc courses in criminology & forensic sciences. These will cater to not only students, but also government officials who want to learn about the subjects.
BN Chattoraj, dean of academics, said a student must be a graduate in any discipline from a recognised university with 50% marks to apply for these courses. “However, for the cybersecurity course we are looking for students with a computers or information technology background,” he added.
“Victimology is a unique course started by us as it is a rapidly emerging field of study with a focus on victims of crime. In India, we have a criminal justice system, but we don’t focus on victim justice. We will educate students on how to work with the criminal justice system, welfare groups & NGOs that deal with victim support,” Chattoraj said.
In the security management course, students will be taught how to manage physical & digital security, while in cybercrime & law they would be educated on evidence handling & collection, investigation of cybercrime & the laws pertaining to them.
Pervin Malhotra, columnist & counsellor, said, “Cyber security is a job-oriented course that will have plenty of openings in law firms & in companies that require security of their websites. The scope of the public security management course extends to security of educational institutions & schools & high-profile individuals like actors & celebrities.”
The last date of submission of online application form for these programmes is July 31.
