Criminal investigation launched against oldest Hindu temple in Singapore

The Temple was founded by Tamil pioneers in 1835.

One of the Singapore's oldest Hindu temples is under the investigation over suspected criminal offences.

Police in its statement stated that,"The Commercial Affairs Department is conducting probe into Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, but it is "inappropriate" to comment further on the investigation".

Commissioner of Charities (COC) has stated that in the Statement that it had been notified of investigation and has also launched its own inquiry into Temple.

According to Channel News Asia,"Review identified certain areas of concern with regard to the Governance and Administration, which warrant conducting an inquiry".

COC has stated that,"The religious activities will not be affected and temple can continue with its operations and the daily services".

The Temple is situated at the Serangoon Road which is a well-known landmark in Little India area, which has about 5,000 devotees on each Sundays and is popular among the tourists.

Temple was set up as a trust and obtained the charity status in the year 1988.

The temple is one of the 15 places of worship that have been listed for the conservation by Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).
