Do you agree with Niti Aayog's plea to hand over Non performing Govt Schools to Private Sector

The non-performing or the "hollowed" government schools should be handed over to the private players under the public- private partnership (PPP) model, has been recommended by Niti Aayog.

Niti Aayog, has released the "Three-year action agenda" in which it has recommended that idea, where private sector adopts the government schools while being publicly funded on a per child basis, can be explored.

The report further stated that number of the government schools has increased over the years but the enrolment of students in them have been falling drastically while number of students enrolling in the private schools has been on a rise leading to  the "hollowing" of the state-run schools.

Report states that,"The other important reasons are high rate of the teacher absenteeism, limited time spent on teaching when teacher is in class and generally poor quality of the education are among the important reasons for this emptying out".

During period of 2010-2014, the public schools increased by around 13,500 in number but the total enrolment in them fell by 1.13 crore.

In contrast, the private schools enrolment rose by 1.85 crore. This shift has been accompanied by the hollowing of an alarmingly large number of the public schools.

As per the stats cited in report, there were about 3.7 lakh the state-run schools which have less than 50 students in 2014 -15, which is around 36 per cent of the total number of the public schools.
