One of the oldest Universities in India, the Panjab University (PU) initiated at Lahore in 1882, has a long tradition of pursuing excellence in teaching and research in science and technology, humanities, social sciences, performing arts and sports.

In independent India, Panjab University with its Campus at Chandigarh and nearly 202 affiliated colleges in Punjab state and Chandigarh U.T., has served various societal needs with distinction.
The glorious traditions of the University established during the period of more than 140 years of its long service to the nation since its inception are a source of inspiration for the present generation of faculty members and students. By virtue of its history, experience, achievements and philosophy, the Panjab University has a national character and it enjoys an international stature drawing both faculty and students from all over the country and different parts of the globe.
The Department of Laws, originally established at Lahore in 1889, was re-established at Shimla in 1948, shifted to Jalandhar in 1950 and finally re-located at the University Campus at Chandigarh in 1959. The Department is the pride alma mater of three Chief Justices of India, a large number of Chief Justices of the High Courts, members of subordinate judiciary, civil servants, law officers and members of the legal profession and a large number of legal luminaries and justices.
The department actively promotes research and encourages faculty and students to participate in national and international conferences. Additionally, the moot court competitions, debates, MUNs etc. organized by the department offer students a platform to apply their knowledge in practical scenarios.
The Prof. Anil Thakur Debating Society, founded in 2022 in memory of Prof. Anil Kumar Thakur, promotes interdisciplinary research, competitive debating, and public speaking among students. It features several sub-groups including the Family Law and ADR Center, MUN Club, Awaaz, Law Fest, and Anil Kumar Thakur Memorial Lectures, addressing key issues like same-sex marriage, social media ethics, and fake news.
The society’s academic calendar includes diverse, multi-disciplinary activities designed to enhance student engagement in legal and global issues. The Prof. Anil Thakur Debating Society stands as a dynamic institution dedicated to upholding academic excellence, promoting intellectual curiosity, and empowering students to become informed leaders in law and society.
Through its diverse programs and initiatives, the society continues to honor and advance the legacy of its founder, inspiring future generations to pursue excellence in legal education and societal impact.
The Department of Laws is going to organise 4th Prof. Anil Kumar Thakur Memorial National Debate Competition on October 15th-16th, 2024 in the loving memory of Prof. (Dr.) Anil Kumar Thakur. Earlier, the Department has successfully organised three editions of the said competition on the themes, “Uniform Civil Code (Should be or Should not be)” on 18th October, 2023, ”Same Sex Marriages: Rejection or Recognition?“ on 10th November, 2022, and “Social Media and Right to Privacy” on 15th March, 2022.

Last year’s event was a milestone for us, setting a new benchmark in MUN world. This year, we’re thrilled to introduce DOLMUN 2.0 which builds directly on the foundation laid before and promises to offer even more exciting opportunities and insights. DOL MUN brings to you a forum for leadership and diplomacy, providing an opportunity to discuss ideas, debate upon contemporary issues, learn about UN council and navigating the intricacies of international affairs, and formulate solutions for the impending global problems related to entrepreneurship, business, world market, digitization and economic reforms. This immersive experience invites you to connect, challenge, and contribute to the discourse in a vibrant setting that echoes the esteemed legacy of our institution.
DOLMUN will consist of the following committees and their agendas:
Case: Dispute involving the treatment of migrants at an international border, potentially violating international human rights standards.
Focus: The balance between border security and migrant rights, state obligations under international human rights law, and the ICJ’s role in resolving migration disputes.
