Why is India poor? This is a vital question all of us have asked at one time or another, either as part of our formal studies or during our colloquial conversations.

Despite showing some sporadic improvements, poverty in India is still widespread and continues to plague the lives of millions. There have been numerous answers to the question as to why is India poor and most of the answers have revolved around issues such as population explosion, resource scarcity, cultural backwardness or simply the idea that Indians or South Asians are generally lazy people. Are these assumptions the root cause or are they merely the tip of the iceberg? What are those unseen causes of poverty?

In this SASFL Webinar on “Why is India Poor?” with Parth J. Shah, we will engage on and scrutinise the popular assumptions about India’s poverty and try to understand whether these dominant discourses have any veracity at all or are they merely
overlooking the larger problem.

About the Speaker

The speaker for the Webinar Dr. Parth J Shah is the Founder of Centre for Civil Society (CCS), a New Delhi-based market-liberal think tank that advances social change through public policy. Its work in education, livelihoods, and policy training promote choice and accountability across the private and public sectors. Parth’s research and advocacy work focus on the themes of economic freedom, choice, and competition in education, property rights approach to the environment and new public management. He holds a PhD in economics and has taught at the University of Michigan and has been a visiting faculty at JNU, Delhi and MS University, Vadodara.
