The Supreme Court directed the immediate release of Delhi-based advocate Vikram Singh, who had been arrested by the Gurugram Police’s Special Task Force (STF) in connection with a murder case.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran and Justice N.V. Anjaria issued the order while hearing submissions by Senior Advocate Vikas Singh, appearing on behalf of the petitioner.

The Court ordered that the advocate be released forthwith upon furnishing a bail bond of ₹10,000, and listed the matter for further consideration next Wednesday. It also instructed the Registrar (Judicial) to ensure immediate communication of the order to the Commissioner of Police, Gurugram, for compliance without delay.

Vikram Singh, who has been enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi since July 2019, is presently lodged in Faridabad jail.

The plea before the Apex Court alleged that the advocate’s arrest was retaliatory in nature, claiming that Singh was targeted after he moved an application before a local court accusing STF officials of custodial assault on one of his clients, Jyoti Prakash alias “Baba”, who had reportedly sustained a leg fracture while in custody.

“The arrest was carried out as an act of reprisal by the investigating agency, amounting to a clear abuse of power,” the petition contended.

It was further alleged that Singh was taken into custody on October 31 without being informed of the written grounds of arrest or the presence of independent witnesses, which, according to the plea, amounted to a violation of Article 21 and Article 22 of the Constitution, guaranteeing personal liberty and procedural safeguards.
