Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has challenged a trial court’s summons in a defamation case, asking the Supreme Court to intervene. The trial court had directed Tharoor to appear on September 10 over his alleged comment comparing Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a Scorpion.
Today, Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra assured Tharoor’s counsel that the Court would consider an urgent listing. The matter will be reviewed tomorrow by Justice Hrishikesh Roy and R Mahadevan.
The case was filed by BJP leader Rajiv Babbar following Tharoor’s statement at the Bangalore Literature Festival in November 2018, where he alleged said Modi was “a scorpion sitting on a Shivling”.On August 09, the Delhi High Court refused to quash the case, prompting Tharoor’s appeal to the Supreme Court.
