The Supreme Court has opened applications for the engagement of Law Clerks-cum-Research Associates for the 2026–27 term, inviting eligible law graduates and final-year students to apply by February 7, with the selection aimed at building a 90-member panel for full-time contractual legal research roles within the apex court.
The recruitment is being conducted under the Supreme Court’s revised scheme governing short-term contractual engagement of law clerks. The positions are strictly full-time, carrying a consolidated monthly remuneration of Rs. 1 lakh, but without any right to regular appointment or continuation beyond the contract period. Applicants must be law graduates from Bar Council-recognised institutions, though final-year students may apply subject to proof of degree completion before joining. The Court has also made it clear that selected candidates cannot take up any other assignment or practise as advocates during the tenure, underscoring the exclusive nature of the role.
Detailing the conditions of engagement, the Court clarified that the Registry retains the authority to terminate the assignment in accordance with the prescribed notice requirements. The notification states that law clerks will be expected to assist judges through intensive legal research and drafting, often under time-sensitive conditions. The selection process will unfold in three stages, a multiple-choice test, a descriptive written examination, and an interview, with written exams scheduled for March 7, 2026, across multiple cities. Online applications open on January 20, with a non-refundable application and test fee of Rs 750.
