On Friday, the Supreme Court approved the draft constitution of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) prepared by former Apex Court Justice L. Nageswara Rao with certain modifications and directed the federation to adopt it within four weeks in a general body meeting.
The Division Bench of Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice Joymalya Bagchi recognised the election of the current executive committee of the AIFF headed by President Kalyan Chaubey and said there is no point in holding fresh elections as only one year of the term remains. The draft constitution was prepared following the Apex court’s directions and had been reserved for judgment on April 30. The court heard clause-wise objections raised by various state football associations and former players.
The draft constitution, prepared by Justice L. Nageswara Rao, proposed that a person may hold office for a maximum of 12 years during their lifetime, serving a maximum of two successive four-year terms. A cooling-off period of four years must be observed after eight years as an office-bearer, and no member can remain part of the federation after reaching 70 years of age.
Under the draft, the AIFF executive committee would have 14 members, including one president, two vice presidents (a man and a woman), one treasurer, and ten other members. Of the ten, five would be eminent players, including two women. The draft also includes provisions for the removal of office-bearers, including the president, through a no-confidence motion.
The Court approved the draft constitution with modifications and directed the AIFF to adopt it within four weeks during a general body meeting.
