December,22,2015: In a landmark move, the Rajya Sabha passed the SC & ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Bill pretty peacefully. Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Sabha PJ Kurien appreciated the unanimous way the bill was discussed. This was among the other two bills which were passed unanimously by the Higher House within minutes.
The Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Bill, 2014 aims to prohibit the commission of offences against members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SCs and STs) and provides for establishing special courts for the trial of such offences and the rehabilitation of victims.
Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha decides to discuss Juvenile Justice Bill tomorrow as it was not listed for today.
