The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) and other authorities to respond to concerns about extensive mining in Uttarkhand’s Bageshwar district. This mining has allegedly caused issues similar to those in Joshimath, including cracks in homes, temples, and roads.

The NGT took suo moto notice after a media report highlighted ongoing mining despite multiple complaints, with no safety audits or geological assessments conducted. NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member Afroz Ahmad stated that the issue raises significant environmental concerns. They have included the Dehradun regional office of MoEF&CC, the Bageshwar district magistrate, the Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board, and the Central Pollution Control Board as respondents.

The tribunal has instructed these respondents to submit their affidavits at least one week before the next hearing on December 11. Respondents who file a reply directly must be virtually present to assist the tribunal.
