On Monday, the High Court of Bombay granted 2 months of interim medical bail to Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal in a money laundering case registered against him by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Naresh Goyal is presently hospitalised at HN Reliance private hospital for treatment of cancer & has been ordered to pay Rs 1 lakh with sureties for his release by a single-judge bench of Justice NJ Jamadar.

Goyal was denied permanent bail on medical grounds by a special court on April 10 though the Judge had agreed to his hospitalisation for treatment. He then moved to the High Court seeking permanent medical bail.

The Court also directed him to stay within the jurisdiction of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Court in Mumbai.

Goyal had initially approached the sessions court for bail. The special judge then permitted him to consult private doctors for a medical checkup.

Based on these medical reports, Goyal sought interim medical bail since the check-up revealed malignant tumors.

The special judge permitted him to be hospitalised for two months to avail cancer treatment.

However, his plea for permanent bail on medical grounds came to be rejected in April, though the Jet Airways founder was allowed to remain in hospital for treatment.

However, the Enforcement Directorate had opposed the grant of bail & said that instead, his stay at a private hospital could be extended by a month.

In Feb, a special court refused bail to Goyal & permitted him to be admitted to a private hospital of his choice & seek medical treatment.

In Sept 2023, ED arrested Goyal for allegedly laundering funds & diverting loans worth Rs 538.62 crore sanctioned to Jet Airways by Canara Bank.

Subsequently, in Nov 2023, Anita Goyal, his wife, was apprehended following the ED's filing of a charge sheet. However, she was promptly granted bail by the special court on the grounds of her age & health condition.
