In a startling case of impersonation and fraudulent activities, the Chennai police have apprehended an individual who falsely claimed to be the personal secretary of Justice N. Anand Venkatesh of the Madras High Court. The impostor, identified as R. Venkatesaperumal, resorted to using the judge's name to secure a seat in a prestigious private engineering college in Chennai.
The incident came to light when a senior advocate practising in the High Court brought to the attention of the judge's chambers that a person purporting to be Justice Venkatesh's secretary had contacted the college, seeking admission for a student who was portrayed as the judge's relative. The advocate also shared the phone number from which the fraudulent call was made.
In response to this alarming revelation, K. Pushpalatha, the official personal secretary of Justice Venkatesh, took prompt action. She dialled the phone number that had been used to make the impersonating call, and the person on the other end introduced himself as Srinivasan and claimed to be the judge's secretary.
The severity of the situation led to a formal complaint being lodged with the High Court Police Station. The police acted swiftly, registering a case against the impostor under Sections 417 (cheating), 419 (impersonation), and 511 of the Indian Penal Code.
Upon investigation, the police arrested R. Venkatesaperumal from Ramapuram in Chennai. Shockingly, the suspect was found in possession of a card identifying him as a non-judicial member of the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. This card was allegedly being used to add credibility to his claims.
The arrested individual was subsequently remanded in judicial custody as he awaits further legal proceedings. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance against fraudulent activities and the need to uphold the integrity of institutions, especially when attempts are made to misuse their credibility for personal gain.
