On Friday, a 40-year-old lawyer was shot dead during a morning walk in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur, in an attack now under police investigation. The incident, caught on CCTV, has raised concerns about rising violence in local areas and the safety of legal professionals outside court premises.

The incident occurred when the victim, a practicing lawyer and resident of a village in Mirzapur, was out for his routine walk. CCTV footage reportedly shows two individuals arriving on a motorcycle, with one assailant stepping down and firing at close range before fleeing with his accomplice. The deceased was also connected to local governance through his family, adding another layer to the possible motive. Following a complaint by family members, police registered a case and began a probe, while initial findings suggest that both the victim and the suspected attackers belonged to the same village, pointing towards a possible personal or community-level conflict.

While no judicial findings have emerged yet, the police have indicated that the incident appears to have originated from a local dispute, with Mirzapur Superintendent of Police stating that “the incident appears to have stemmed from a local dispute.” Authorities have taken the body into custody for post-mortem and initiated formal proceedings, with efforts underway to identify and apprehend the assailants.
