The Law Minister Kiren Rijiju informed the Rajya Sabha that Law Ministry has received a proposal for setting up National Law University (NLU) in Andhra Pradesh in the lines of National Law University, Bangalore.

 The Questions was laid by the member of the House, Mr. T. G. Venkatesh that whether Government has received any proposal from the State Government of Andhra Pradesh seeking establishment of National Law University in the State.

Mr. Kiren Rijiju responded to the questions that “A communication from the Government of Andhra Pradesh was received regarding establishment of a National Law University in Andhra Pradesh in the lines of National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru. As the NLSIU is sponsored by the National Law School of India Society, a society registered by the Bar Council of India Trust, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has requested to encourage the Bar Council of India to extend similar patronage to the proposed National Law University in Andhra Pradesh.”

Law Minister further informed that under Section 7(1)(h) of the Advocates Act, 1961, the function to promote legal education and to lay down standards of such education in consultation with the Universities in India imparting such education and the State Bar Councils is exclusively within the domain of the Bar Council of India. Accordingly, the communication of Government of Andhra Pradesh is being forwarded to the Bar Council of India.
