The Kerala High Court and District Courts have successfully employed Anuvadini, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) under the Ministry of Education, to translate court judgments into Malayalam, the vernacular language of the state.
According to a press release issued by the High Court, this AI tool has facilitated the translation of over 317 High Court judgments and more than 5,136 District Court judgments from English to Malayalam. These translated judgments have been uploaded on the respective court websites, ensuring wider accessibility for the public.
The initiative was carried out under the leadership and guidance of Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque, Chairman of the Computerisation Committee, along with Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan V and Justice Kauser Edappagath, who are members of the Artificial Intelligence Assisted Legal Translation Advisory Committee.
In the first phase of the project, the Kerala High Court aimed to translate and make available all judgments certified for reporting in Malayalam. The translated versions of judgments will also be shared with the Legal Service Authority to enhance legal education and awareness among various government departments and stakeholders, including litigants.
