The appointment of Justice Lisa Gill as the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court has been officially notified by the Central Government, marking a significant judicial elevation.
The notification was issued in exercise of constitutional powers, following consultation with the Chief Justice of India. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal publicly confirmed that Justice Lisa Gill, who was serving as a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court (with parent High Court being Punjab and Haryana High Court), has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the same High Court.
Prior to this elevation, Justice Gill had been transferred from the Punjab and Haryana High Court to the Andhra Pradesh High Court. This transfer was carried out in anticipation of the upcoming retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice.
The move aligns with a recent approach adopted by the Supreme Court Collegium, which involves transferring judges likely to be appointed as Chief Justices at least two months before the vacancy arises. The objective behind this policy is to allow the incoming Chief Justice adequate time to become acquainted with the functioning and administrative framework of the High Court.
