On Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court was approached by the management of a decades-old Chinese language school in Kolkata, seeking directions for Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel to vacate its premises. The management argues that the continued occupation has stalled classes and disrupted students’ education.
The petition has been filed by the authorities of the Pei Mei Chinese School in Tangra’s Chinatown area, where CISF jawans have been stationed since September 2024 after being deployed for security duties at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. According to the school management, the premises were initially taken over for a short, temporary period, but the occupation has continued well beyond that assurance, leaving the institution unable to resume teaching activities for students enrolled on Classes 1 to 10.
Placing the issue before the High Court, the school authorities contended that repeated requests for vacating the premises went unanswered, forcing them to seek judicial intervention, particularly with the Chinese New Year approaching. Emphasising the prolonged nature of the occupation, the school representative stated, “It has been more than one and a half years, but the school continues to be occupied by the CISF jawans.” The petition seeks an order directing the force to vacate the building at the earliest so academic activities can recommence. The matter is expected to be listed for hearing shortly.
