A magistrate court in Mumbai has taken a significant step in response to a defamation complaint filed by MP Rahul Shewale against Uddhav Thackeray, the chief of Shiv Sena (UBT), and party MP Sanjay Raut.
The court has issued summons to Thackeray and Raut, directing them to appear before it on July 14 to address the allegations made by Shewale, who is associated with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
The complaint stems from defamatory articles published in Saamna, the Sena mouthpiece, of which Raut serves as the chief editor and Thackeray as the executive editor. Shewale claims that the articles, published in December 2022, falsely alleged his involvement in real estate dealings in Karachi, aiming to tarnish his reputation and political career.
According to the plea filed by Shewale, the defamatory articles were an attempt to damage his standing within the party, as he had previously held significant responsibilities before joining Shinde-led Sena. He expresses astonishment at the resorting to such tactics by the accused, labeling it as "vendetta journalism." Shewale further emphasizes that the articles were published without any verification, highlighting the lack of credibility behind the accusations.
Additionally, Shewale's wife had previously filed a defamation complaint against the same publication in January for other defamatory articles, reinforcing the gravity of the situation. The plea seeks the issuance of summons against Thackeray and Raut under sections 500 and 501 of the Indian Penal Code related to defamation.
The court's decision to dismiss the complaint against two unnamed news reporters mentioned in the plea indicates a focus on the specific individuals named as defendants. The court's objective is to address the alleged defamatory acts and determine their validity.
This legal development adds to the ongoing controversy surrounding the Shiv Sena and highlights the importance of accountability in the media. The forthcoming court appearance of Thackeray and Raut on July 14 will shed further light on the matter and determine the course of action in this high-profile defamation case.
