Minister of State in Ministry of Home Affairs informed Lok Sabha that sanctioned strength of police is 26,23,225 where as actual strength is 20,91,488. There are 5,31,737 vacancies in Police Department

He replied to an Unstarred Question related to the action taken by the Government to fill the vacancies in Police Department.

He stated that As per data on Police Organisations compiled by Bureau of Police Research and Development, sanctioned strength of police is 26,23,225, actual strength is 20,91,488 and 5,31,737 vacancies are there as on 01.01.2020.

The Minister further stated that “Police” is a State subject falling in List-II (State List) of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution of India. It is primarily the responsibility of the State Governments to fill up the vacancies in the police force in their respective States.

The highest number of vacancies is in Uttar Pradesh i.e. 1,11,865 followed by West Bengal and Bihar.
